Wedding Guest Series: What to Wear to a Wedding

Wedding season is in full swing and to mix things up a little I thought I’d blog about weddings from a different perspective; the guest. This blog post is for all of us who are going to a wedding and are struggling to decide what to wear.

One of the first places to look for dress code clues is the invitation. Sometimes dress code is stated on the invitation or wedding website so make sure to take note of that. If there isn’t a dress code listed, then the wedding venue will help you to decide how dressy the wedding will be. Beach or outdoor weddings will be more of a cocktail or dressy casual dress code whereas a ballroom wedding will be more formal.

Here are some common phrases used when describing dress code:

Casual wear – Girls feel free to wear a summer sundress or a cute blouse with a skirt or pants. Guys casual wear is dress pants with a button-down shirt or polo (aka something with buttons = not too casual ;))

Semiformal or dressy casual – Girls wear a cocktail dress or dressy skirt and top. Guys wear a suit and tie.

Beach formal – Think breezy and comfortable but appropriate for the beach. Girls wear a more formal summer sundress with flat sandals (tea or knee-length dresses are appropriate). Guys wear a summer suit and shirt with khakis or dress pants. (No tie required).

Black Tie Optional – Think dark and sophisticated. Girls wear a long dress, dressy suit, or formal cocktail dress in dark or neutral tones (brown, grey or black). Guys wear a tuxedo or a formal dark suit and tie.

Black Tie – Think formal. Girls wear a cocktail dress or long evening gown in a dark or neutral colour (brown or black). Guys wear a tuxedo, black bow tie, and black leather shoes.

Also, don’t forget about your shoes! You want to be able to dance the night away with everyone else so be sure to wear shoes that you can dance in! Wedges, low-mid high heels, dressy sandals or even chic ballet flats are great choices!

In any case wear, something comfortable. It’s no fun to be constantly pulling at your strapless dress or constantly worrying about how you look, so be comfortable and enjoy your being there for your friends and families at their upcoming weddings!
