Ever been unsure if you can bring a date with you to a wedding you’ve been invited to? Well today I’m giving you some tips on how to find out if you can bring a plus one!
The general rule of thumb is if you’re married, engaged or in a serious relationship (ie. living together or been dating for more than a year) then you’ll be invited as a couple. But if you don’t fall into those categories, you may be invited just on your own. While this may be frustrating or seem like an insult, consider it from the bride and groom’s perspective. The typical reasoning for not giving a guest a plus one is because of budget or space concerns. If the venue the couple loves only seats 200 then the couple has to be very strict and selective to choose those 200 people who mean the most to them to attend their wedding. Alternatively it come down to budget. The average wedding in Canada can cost anywhere between $20,000-$30,000. Everyone who is invited to the wedding needs to be thoughtfully chosen and sometimes this means if you’re not in a serious relationship you may not get to bring a date. Just remember, it’s not about you, the wedding day is about the bride and groom.
So how do you know if you can bring a plus one? Read the envelope of the save the date and/or invitation. If you’re in a serious relationship or married, it will state both of your names on the envelope. If you’ve been given a plus one it will state your name and guest on the envelope. If the envelope only shows your name, then you have been invited to come on your own. But don’t worry, get in touch with other friends who you know have been invited, maybe they’re going solo as well and you’ll be able to celebrate the wedding together!
The only exception to this rule is if you’re in the bridal party. Typically as a thank you for helping with the wedding, the bride and groom will extend the plus one rule to anyone who’s single in the bridal party. If you’re in the bridal party and in a serious relationship, then naturally your significant other will also be invited as well.
